Market Overview

India’s fruit and vegetable sector is a critical part of its agricultural economy. The country ranks second in the world in the production of both fruits and vegetables, contributing substantially to its export revenue. According to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the export of fresh fruits and vegetables from India reached approximately USD 1.4 billion in the fiscal year 2022-23.

In the first nine months of the current fiscal year 2022-23 (April-December 2022), fresh fruit exports from India grew by 29% compared to the same period last year, reaching 111 countries (up from 102 countries). Specifically, banana exports increased by 63%, kesar mango exports jumped 120%, and dasheri mango exports rose 140%.

Processed fruits and vegetables (including pulses) exports from India were valued at $1.72 billion during 2021-22, with $1.11 billion from processed vegetables and $610.69 million from processed fruits.

From April-December 2022, processed fruits and vegetables exports grew by 30.36% compared to the same period in 2021.

In the first four months of the current fiscal year 2023-24 (April-July 2022), fresh fruit and vegetable exports totaled $498 million, while processed fruits and vegetables exports more than doubled to $665 million from $441 million in the same period last year.

The major fruits exported from India are grapes, pomegranates, mangoes, bananas, and oranges, while the major vegetables exported are onions, mixed vegetables, potatoes, tomatoes, and green chilies.

Fruits

  1. Mangoes: Known as the “king of fruits,” Indian mangoes are highly sought after worldwide. Varieties like Alphonso, Kesar, and Dasheri are famous for their unique taste and aroma. In 2022-23, India exported around 50,000 metric tons of mangoes, valued at USD 220 million.
  2. Bananas: India is the largest producer of bananas, and its export market has been expanding steadily. Major importing countries include UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. The export value of bananas was approximately USD 112 million in 2022-23.
  3. Grapes: Indian grapes, particularly the Thompson Seedless variety, are popular in European markets. The country exported about 200,000 metric tons of grapes, worth USD 335 million, during the last fiscal year.

Vegetables

  1. Onions: Onions are a major export commodity for India, with substantial demand from neighboring countries and the Middle East. In 2022-23, India exported 1.2 million metric tons of onions, generating around USD 305 million.
  2. Potatoes: Indian potatoes are exported to countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the UAE. The export volume reached 350,000 metric tons, valued at USD 85 million in the last fiscal year.
  3. Tomatoes: Fresh tomatoes are another key vegetable export, with significant shipments to Bangladesh, Nepal, and the UAE. The export value was around USD 52 million in 2022-23.
